5 Interior Design Lessons I Learned From the French

Several years ago I packed up my belongings and hopped across the pond, to spend some time living in Paris. I went for a few different reasons. I was a part-owner on a cafe at the time, a special little place that I had opened with friends and that we’ve since sold (though it remains open under different ownership — Foundation Cafe, Paris). I didn’t actually DO much to make the cafe work, more just sit there sipping on cappuccinos and watching the world go by, and I did a whole lot of that. I had also always wanted to spend some time living in Paris. I mean WHO DOESN’T want to live it Paris?? It’s amazing.

Current Design Obsession: Blue & White Wallpapers

I wanted to take a moment to talk about my current design obsession, blue & white wallpaper, and also share a list of my tops picks for the best blue & white wallpapers.

Blue & white is one of those classically elegant interior design motifs that goes back for centuries (literally!)…think ming dynasty ceramics (circa 1400) and Delftware from the Netherlands (circa 1650-1700). The beautiful thing about this color combination, is that it remains fresh, with each new generation re-imagining and reinventing it.

Long Sleeve Dresses for Fall & Winter

I love a good dress. It's one item of clothing to pick out, a few accessories, and shoes and then you're good to go. But something happens when the weather starts to turn brisk, and suddenly it's been six months since I've even thought about putting on anything other then jeans and a sweater.

Enter, my long sleeve dresses guide. This could probably be tagged more accurately as 'self-help' but we'll call it fashion, cause that just sounds a whole lot better.

The 12 Best Bar stools

I've seen so many great bar stools lately, and wanted to share a round-up of the best bar stools available today, along with a couple of pointers on how to choose a bar stool, and the also answer the question of what is the difference between a bar stool and counter stool.

Bar stools are like powder rooms...hear me out on this. With both of these things it helps to add a splash of daring.

Cast Iron Skillet Cornbread Recipe

Being of southern origin, I believe there must be a birthright that goes along with making good homemade cornbread and I wanted to share with you here my favorite recipe.

In my household, cornbread is a mandatory addition anytime we have chili (one day I'll post that recipe too), but you can have cornbread alongside just about any other meal as well. My favorite rendition includes fresh corn kernels in the bread for added texture, but feel free to leave those out, if it's not to your liking.

Fall Fashion Favorites

FALL IS HERE!!! Since fall is now officially official, I wanted to do a blog post about fall fashion. So please excuse the interruption in our normally scheduled Friday Favorites programming.

Having grown up in Florida, I didn't really experience fall. Since moving north 10 years ago, I've come to enjoy and adore fall. I think it may very well be my favorite season, or at least tied with summer.

Here are some favorite clothing and accessories I've found for a fall fashion and wardrobe refresh. I've grouped these by occasion, so a night out vs work-day wear. I have even more items that you can see on my Pinterest boards.

Friday Favorites: September 15, 2017

It's Friday! And there is so much I'm thankful for thankful for this week. Is it Thanksgiving yet?! This time last weekend, I was quite concerned for the safety of my family living in Florida and the southeast region who were in the path of Hurricane Irma. Now they've all come through the storm unharmed, and I'm super thankful for that.

We've also had a week of 80+ degree temperatures here in New York, and that is always a joy and a blessing. Here, I want to share with you a few favorites. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

10 Nightstands to Suit Any Budget

This morning I wanted to share with you a round-up of 10 nightstands at all different price points.

Nightstands (or bedside tables, as some may call them) are one of those anomalies in the interior design and furniture world, where the price can really sneak up on you. Maybe that's not such an anomaly after-all. But consider this scenario, most of us approach the process of buying a sofa with the expectation that it will likely cost us well over a few hundred dollars to find the piece that we really like. When it comes to purchasing a pair of nightstands however, it's often surprising that you can easily spend as much (if not more) on a pair of quality nightstands. This doesn't always have to be the case, though.

Strawberry Peach Crumbles

Happy Labor Day, y'all! :)

Today I want to share with you a recipe for one of my favorite desserts, Strawberry Peach Crumbles. If you didn't already have dessert plans, consider your menu completed!

I'm calling these Strawberry Peach Crumbles, but you can make them with just about any fruit (fresh or frozen). I've been eating these all summer long, mostly with fresh strawberries. Now that we're transitioning into fall (!!!), you better believe I'll be trying these out with freshly picked apples as well (I'll report back on how that goes). I made the ones you see here, just the other night with only peaches (just 1 peach per serving). I've also made these with a whole mix-up of different fruits: peaches, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, and that was great too. Just use whatever you have on hand.

Friday Favorites: September 1, 2017

It's Friday! And it's September too! How did that happen?!? Does it mean that I'm getting old, if time has begun to fly by, without my noticing? I'm pretty sure I heard my grandmother comment about "where does the time go" as I was growing up.

I have a new batch of Friday Favorites that I'm excited to share with you today. I also want to announce that I'll be changing things up, and my Friday Favorites post will now move to the first and third Fridays of each month, to allow for some other posts during those alternating weeks. Thank you for going on this journey with me, as I learn and develop in my blogging.

The 10 Best Canopy Beds

There's something so romantic and transporting about a canopy bed. In furniture history, the canopy bed dates back hundreds of years, and would have been originally designed for more practical purposes with a canopy or tapestry covering the top, and curtains on all 4 sides enclosing the bed, for both privacy purposes and also for maintaining warmth in large and drafty old houses and estates.

Here I've rounded up 10 great options for canopy beds (also closely related to the four poster bed). From traditional, to whimsical, to modern, this is a piece of furniture that transcends time and trends, making it a classic staple for interiors.

Friday Favorites: August 25, 2017

I've struggled with what to say for this week's Friday Favorites post. It has been a roller coaster of emotions this week. It started out with a trip to NYNOW, an awesome design event here in the city (read my wrap up here). Then later this week, I learned of the passing of two friends from my childhood church, two great men who died in separate events just 1 day apart from one another. Two great people, husbands, fathers and friends, gone too soon. It makes me want hold on extra tight to the ones I love, and make sure that I tell my husband 100x, how much I adore him.

Here's to a weekend of rest and enjoying the people who are meaningful in your life...and a few pretty things to look at too.

NYNOW Summer 2017 - Market Report

Yesterday I attended NYNOW Summer 2017 at the Jacob Javits Center here in New York. The event showcases vendors and makers from across the United States, as well as a section for handmade goods, and a section for global handmade items. As both an interior designer and a maker, this show is like Disneyland for me! It's a chance to see and feel most of the furniture and decor items that I source for my interior design clients all in one place (like a huge to-the-trade shopping mall) as well as checking out what other makers are creating and selling.

Friday Favorites: August 18, 2017

Happy Friday to you! I hope you've had a great week so far with even better things in-store for the weekend. It's been a busy one here in New York. I feel like I've had my nose glued to my desk all summer long, and I've hardly enjoyed those wonderful things that make summer so great. Time to get out there and make the most of these weeks we have left! Here are my Friday Favorites for this week.

Homemade Yogurt

I’m back this morning, and talking about yogurt (again). Why so much yogurt-talk? I eat yogurt and granola just about every morning, so I have lots of time to think about how to make even the most simple and routine parts of life, more enjoyable.

This time, instead of granola, I’m talking about how to make an easy homemade yogurt. It involves a crockpot, two bath towels, and some live cultures! Sounds intriguing, right?!

Friday Favorites: August 11, 2017

This week I returned from a wonderful weekend trip to visit family in Florida, and I've been settling back into the rhythms and routines of everyday life. Isn't it funny how that works? It's so nice to getaway for a trip, and then it's also really great to come home.

My Friday Favorites this week are dedicated to favorite things at home in NY, favorite things in Florida, and then favorite items discovered while traveling between here and there.
